W. C. Williams Building
Here is some history on the Chisholm Trail and the cattle business in Texas. Some of you know the Williams Building we restored and in which we live, was built by W. C. “Billy” Williams who was a childhood friend of Charlie Siringo, who wrote the first book on what it was like to be a cowboy in the era just after the Civil War. Charlie mentions Billy and his family and their adventures in the book. Here is a link to the book for those interested: archive.org/details/texascowboyorfif00siri #chisholmtrail #charliesiringo #texashistoricalcommission #friendsofthetexashistoricalcommission #williamsbuildingpalacios Texas Historical Commission Texas Back Roads Friends of the Texas Historical Commission Omega Productions ... It’s the end of an era and the start of new opportunities for us. We have sold our building. After moving to this unique town on the Texas Coast 12 years ago and having the privilege to restore and be the caretakers of this historic structure, new owners will soon experience its intrinsic charm. We are not leaving but are locating to another place across town to help in a much needed down sizing. Thanks to all who have followed our adventure and best wishes to the new owners. Now you know the story. #musicicons #musichistory #omegaliveproductions #williamsbuildingpalacios Omega ProductionsAlexander Thomas Augusta was rejected from medical school in the United States for the color of his skin. Refusing to give up, he moved to Canada and earned his degree in medicine from Trinity College of the University of Toronto. With the Emancipation Proclamation and creation of the United States Colored Troops, Augusta offered his services to the U.S. Army.Once again, he faced institutional racism. The Medical Department Board of Examination focused on his being "a person of African descent," but also tried to argue that he could not be admitted as a surgeon because "he is an alien & a British subject - his entrance into the US Military Service is an Evident violation of her Britannic Majesty's Proclamation of neutrality." The proclamation was issued on this day in 1861.It took an appeal to the highest levels of government to finally admit Augusta as a surgeon. He would eventually become the highest ranking black officer of the Civil War and led a distinguished careerSource:NARA M1820.
